通行本《百家姓》成书于北宋初年，一般说收录 504 个姓氏（单姓 444 个、复姓 60 个），各版本对个别复姓、单姓的断句不尽相同。本页按通行断句列出，个别姓氏（如「于」「郁」「后」）在原文中出现两次。The standard text from the early Northern Song is usually said to list 504 surnames (444 single, 60 compound); editions split a few entries differently. A few surnames (于, 郁, 后) appear twice.

《百家姓》编成于北宋，宋朝皇帝姓赵，所以「赵」排在第一位；排序并不代表人口多少。It was compiled under the Song dynasty, whose emperors were surnamed Zhao; the order says nothing about population.
