The defenders escort their king from the central throne to any of the four corners, while the attackers try to surround and capture him. Every piece moves like a chess rook, and sandwiching an enemy piece between two of yours captures it. The two sides have completely different goals — play attackers or defenders against three computer levels, or two players, with undo.

「维京棋」怎么玩？How do I play Viking Chess?
黑色是 8 颗进攻方棋子，白色是 4 颗防守方棋子和金色国王。棋子横竖任意格直走，不能越子；王座和四角只有国王能停（其他棋子可以穿过空王座）。走到某颗敌子的另一侧、把它夹在自己两颗子（或一颗子与角落/空王座）之间，就吃掉它。国王走到任意角落，防守方胜；国王在王座上或紧挨王座时要被四面围住才算被擒，离开王座后被两颗进攻方棋子前后夹住即被擒，进攻方胜。Dark are the 8 attackers; light are the 4 defenders and the golden king. Pieces move any distance horizontally or vertically without jumping; only the king may stop on the throne or a corner (others may pass over the empty throne). Move so that an enemy piece is sandwiched between two of yours — or one of yours and a corner or the empty throne — to capture it. If the king reaches a corner, the defenders win. On or next to the throne the king must be surrounded on all four sides; away from it, two attackers on opposite sides capture him, and the attackers win.

小棋盘上双方大致平衡：进攻方要尽快封锁角落附近的通道，防守方要给国王打开直线通往角落。On this small board the sides are fairly balanced: attackers must close the lanes near the corners fast, defenders must open a straight path for the king.
