32 枚象棋棋子背面朝上随机摆满 4×8 的格子。轮到你时可以翻开一枚暗棋，或者走一枚己方的明棋。第一枚翻开的棋子决定颜色：翻出红子的一方就执红。棋子大小：帅（将）＞仕（士）＞相（象）＞车＞马＞炮＞兵（卒），每步横竖走一格，可以吃相邻的、同级或更小的对方明棋；但兵能吃帅，帅不能吃兵。炮平时也只走一格，吃子时必须沿直线隔着一枚棋子（明暗都算）打对方明棋，距离不限，任何棋子都能打。吃光对方棋子或让对方无棋可走就赢了。The 32 xiangqi pieces are shuffled face down on a 4×8 grid. On your turn either flip a hidden piece or move one of your face-up pieces. The first piece flipped decides colours: whoever flips it plays that colour. Ranks: general > advisor > elephant > chariot > horse > cannon > soldier. Pieces move one square orthogonally and capture an adjacent face-up enemy of equal or lower rank — except that the soldier captures the general and the general cannot capture the soldier. The cannon also moves one square, but captures by jumping exactly one piece (face up or down) in a straight line at any distance, and can take any rank. Capture everything or leave your opponent without a move to win.
电脑会偷看暗棋吗？Does the computer peek at hidden pieces?
不会。电脑只知道还有哪些棋子没翻开（大家都能数出来），翻棋时按所有可能的结果取平均来判断，和你掌握的信息一样多。No. It only knows which pieces are still hidden — something you can count too — and judges a flip by averaging over every piece it might turn out to be.
炮能打暗棋吗？Can the cannon capture a hidden piece?
不能。暗棋只能当炮架，被吃的必须是翻开的对方棋子；其他棋子同样只能吃明棋。No. Hidden pieces can serve as the screen, but only a face-up enemy piece can be captured — by the cannon or anything else.
怎样算和棋？When is it a draw?
双方连续 50 回合既没有吃子也没有翻棋就判和，避免无限追逐。If 50 moves each pass without a capture or a flip the game is drawn, to stop endless chases.
