In lossy images such as JPG a background that looks pure white is often 250–254, so 5%–15% usually catches it all; too high a value also changes similar colours you meant to keep.

With it each pixel keeps its difference from the colour to replace, so a slightly darker shade becomes a slightly darker version of the new colour — good for graphics with gradients or anti-aliased edges. Fully transparent pixels are never changed and transparency is kept (BMP output fills transparent areas with white).
