With 5 or more sides a centre piece is added (upside down for an odd number of sides, so its edges sit against the corner pieces without overlapping); 3 sides has only the three corner pieces and no centre. With 4 sides the four half-size pieces exactly fill the original, so no holes appear — a known special case of the n-flake. More sides look rounder.
