How do I use the Learn to Tell Time – Interactive Clock?

Drag the long (minute) or short (hour) hand; the hour hand follows the minute hand. Tick “Show minute numbers” to help beginners count. Practice: “Read the clock” shows a clock face to answer; “Set the clock” gives a time to set with the hands, then press Check.

Why is 3:45 also “a quarter to four”?

A quarter is 15 minutes. At 3:45 the minute hand points at 9 and there are 15 minutes to 4, so Chinese says 三点三刻 or 差一刻四点 and English says “quarter to four”. Past 40 minutes the tool also shows the “minutes to” form.

Why does the hour hand move with the minute hand?

On a real clock the hour hand moves 30° per hour, 0.5° per minute, so one turn of the minute hand moves it one number. This helps children see why at 3:50 the hour hand is almost at 4.
